Premarital counseling isn't for couples in trouble. It's for couples who want to begin marriage from strength — to talk through the things it's easy to assume you agree on, before those assumptions quietly become the conflicts of year three. Think of it less as fixing something and more as building good foundations while the building is still easy.

What is premarital counseling?

Premarital counseling is a short, structured series of sessions in which you and your partner explore the areas that most shape a marriage — how you communicate, what you each expect, how you handle money and family, and how you'll navigate difference. A therapist helps you have the conversations couples tend to postpone, in a calm setting, before the stakes feel high. The goal isn't to test your relationship but to know it more deeply and build shared skills for the years ahead.

What you'll work on

Every couple is different, but premarital work usually touches on: communication and how you each handle conflict; expectations about roles, work, and daily life; money — how you'll earn, spend, save, and decide together; family — boundaries with in-laws, and if and how you want children; intimacy and how you keep closeness alive; and values and long-term goals. We help you find where you already align, where you differ, and how to hold those differences well rather than pretend they don't exist.

Especially for intercultural & expat couples

When partners come from different cultures or countries — as so many couples in Lisbon do — marriage brings extra questions worth talking through early: whose traditions you'll keep, which language your home and any future children will speak, where you imagine settling, and how each family's expectations fit into the life you're building. These aren't problems; they're simply conversations that go better before the wedding than after.

How it works

Sessions draw on the same evidence-based approaches we use in couples therapy — Emotionally Focused Therapy and the Gottman Method — adapted to a forward-looking, preparatory format. Most couples come for a focused series rather than open-ended therapy, and we tailor the topics to what matters most to you.

Does premarital counseling actually work?

The research is encouraging, with some nuance. A well-known meta-analysis found that the average couple who took part in a premarital program was better off afterwards than about 79% of couples who didn't — roughly a 30% gain in relationship and communication measures. Later analyses are more cautious about long-term effects but consistently find benefits for couple communication. In other words: premarital counseling is a sound investment in how you'll talk and handle conflict together.

When to start

There's no perfect moment, but many couples begin a few months before the wedding — enough time to have the conversations without a countdown hanging over them. It's equally valuable for couples moving in together or making a long-term commitment without a wedding.

Common Questions

Does premarital counseling mean we have problems?
Not at all — most couples who come are doing well and want strong foundations. It's preventive, not remedial.
How many sessions do we need?
Usually a focused series; we'll agree a plan around the topics you most want to cover.
We're not religious — is this for us?
Yes. Our premarital counseling is secular and psychological, centered on your relationship rather than any faith framework.
Can we do it online?
Yes — it works well online, including around travel or a relocation.
