Book a first session →Discovering an affair can feel like the ground has dropped away beneath you. Whether the betrayal was physical, emotional, or online — a secret texting relationship, a hidden dating profile, months of lies — both partners are often left disoriented. One may carry guilt and a desperate wish to repair; the other is flooded by shock, anger, and a loss of trust that reaches into everything, from sleep to the smallest daily interaction. If you are reading this, you are already doing something difficult and important: looking for a way through, rather than simply away.
Marriage counseling after infidelity gives you a structured, supported space to slow down, understand what happened, and make a clear-eyed decision about what comes next — together or apart — without doing further harm to each other in the meantime.
Can a relationship survive infidelity?
Yes — many couples not only survive an affair but go on to build a relationship that is more honest and more securely connected than the one they had before. That is not a guarantee, and it is not automatic. Recovery depends on several things: whether the involved partner can take genuine responsibility and become transparent; whether the hurt partner is given real space to grieve, rage, and be heard; and whether both are eventually willing to look at the disconnection that preceded the affair. It is possible, and it is also hard work. Good therapy makes that work structured and bearable, rather than a cycle of the same unbearable conversation on repeat.
Why affairs happen (understanding is not excusing)
Understanding why an affair happened is not the same as excusing it. Responsibility for the betrayal stays with the person who crossed the line. At the same time, affairs rarely appear out of nowhere. They often grow in the gap left by long-standing disconnection — years of unspoken loneliness, feeling unseen or unimportant, chronic criticism, or an emotional distance neither partner knew how to name. Naming that gap honestly is part of how couples make sure they are healing the whole relationship, not just sealing over a wound that will reopen.
Betrayal trauma: what the hurt partner is living through
For the partner who was betrayed, the aftermath often looks and feels like trauma: intrusive images, a compulsive need to know details, hypervigilance, difficulty eating or sleeping, and waves of emotion that arrive without warning. This is a normal response to a profound attachment injury — the person you relied on for safety became the source of danger. A central task of therapy is to treat this with the seriousness it deserves, rather than rushing the hurt partner to "move on" before the injury has been acknowledged. How marriage counseling for infidelity works
We work primarily through Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) — one of the most researched approaches to couples work — and draw on Gottman Method tools designed specifically for affair recovery. The process usually moves through several stages:
Stabilize
First we lower the daily crisis: agreeing how you will and won't talk about the affair at home, ending contact with the affair partner, and creating enough safety that neither of you is re-traumatized between sessions.
Understand
With that footing, we look at the negative cycle that grew long before the affair — how each of you protected yourself, and what each of you was missing. Here the hurt partner's pain is fully heard, and the involved partner begins to grasp its depth rather than defend against it.
Rebuild trust
Trust returns through consistent, transparent action over time, not a single apology. We help the involved partner offer real accountability and reassurance, and help the hurt partner test and gradually take in that reassurance.
Reconnect
As safety grows, couples can build new, more open conversations — the emotional closeness whose absence made the relationship vulnerable in the first place.
The role of the partner who had the affair
Repair asks a great deal of the involved partner: full transparency, patience with questions that repeat many times, and a willingness to stay present with the other's pain without collapsing into defensiveness or shame. Many people find this stage exhausting and genuinely don't know how to do it well. That is exactly what therapy helps with — turning the wish to repair into concrete, trust-building behavior your partner can actually feel.
Rebuilding after emotional and online affairs
Not every affair is physical. Emotional affairs, secret online relationships, and long-running flirtations can wound just as deeply — sometimes more, because the betrayed partner is often told "nothing happened." In therapy we treat the breach of trust and secrecy as real, whatever form it took, and work with the same care.
When is it time to get help?
Consider reaching out if the same argument about the affair repeats without resolution; if the hurt partner cannot stop checking, questioning, or reliving it; if you are living as roommates and avoiding the subject entirely; or if you genuinely don't know whether to stay and want a fair, supported space to decide. You do not need to have made up your mind to begin.
